I work part-time, have a driver's license, and go to technical college full-time. People often ask my parents how they did it. They didn't. They helped me, but I had to do it when I was ready. I just got my license this year. I wanted to go to college, but my parents couldn't drive me. So I got my license with my parent's help.
I also primarily socialize with my family. And that's okay for right now. I get along with people at my work and school, and I really want to focus on my education right now. I have had a lot of painful and damaging relationships with people my own age, and to be quite frank, I don't feel safe around the majority of them. They refuse to follow my safety rules like no driving fast or scaring me on purpose because they are "boring." My family takes those rules for granted. See why I hang out with them?
The point of this slight ramble is that although I don't know Jacob, I just wanted to show that there are other people like him in the same situation. When he wants something, he will go after it, with your help if necessary. We sound similar. I wish I could have a friend like him :).

Jennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2959253662881047710.post-11988179476871194642011-06-09T07:52:03.000-05:002011-06-09T07:52:03.000-05:00My own Jacob sounds an awful lot like your Jacob (...My own Jacob sounds an awful lot like your Jacob (except that he's 15 and doesn't have the part-time job yet), and my experience sounds a lot like yours. I'm glad to have done all that I have for my child all these years, but I am still waiting for some drive of his own to kick in. The older he gets, the more I see it not happening and wonder if it ever will.

Dianenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2959253662881047710.post-81283156076954233912011-06-08T02:30:59.000-05:002011-06-08T02:30:59.000-05:00Every time I read your posts, I get an extra sprin...Every time I read your posts, I get an extra spring in my step.
It's like you are one of the very few who are drawing the possibilities of the alternate road map for those of us with younger kids.
Thank you, Susan and Jacob.

Valerie Foleyhttp://jumpontherollercoaster.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.com
