It seems the other posters have lucked out while I know many parents across the US who struggle daily to get the SD to recognize, acknowledge, and serve our kids' special needs. And many of the parents lose these battles over and over again. I wish we had been as lucky.

Annettenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2959253662881047710.post-76372296827648500712010-10-01T14:58:52.000-05:002010-10-01T14:58:52.000-05:00We have found the same...public school can best me...We have found the same...public school can best meet the needs of our son with mild special needs. The private schools simply don't have the resources and aren't inclined to include special needs kids in their classrooms. There is a new private school in our area that serves "quirky" kids exclusively. Mostly kids with Asperger's and other similar diagnoses. This doesn't sit well with me either because it isn't the "real world" and for better or worse our son will have to function in the real world, not just with other people who are quirky. Our son is in an inclusion class and has a special ed teacher in the room who helps him and handful of other kids. He also has access to OT and we get daily reports of how he is doing with his IEP goals. Public school isn't perfect but it's the best alternative we have found.

Krisnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2959253662881047710.post-80886211905125089472010-09-29T09:11:38.000-05:002010-09-29T09:11:38.000-05:00What a fascinating post - and I love the idea of t...What a fascinating post - and I love the idea of turning inclusion around to talk about diversity. It really gives it a whole new perspective.
I was recently approached by a national private school about running a guest post on my blog. I was intrigued by their philosophy but asked her about how they serve children with special needs before I would run the piece - I never heard back from her!

Trishhttp://anotherpieceofthepuzzle.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2959253662881047710.post-7574431443775857152010-09-29T07:36:57.000-05:002010-09-29T07:36:57.000-05:00"And the school, which, ironically, is less d..."And the school, which, ironically, is less diverse racially and economically than the private school, due to our local demographic, has one kind of diversity they can’t match. " - Well said!!!
We just experienced something similar with our 5 year old son. He was in a private school for the deaf and due to his autism we were told that they "just couldn't meet all of his needs". It was stunning for us because he is also deaf and this school has never (in its 100 year history) turned away a deaf child. We were devastated.
But now he is happily attending public school, 4 minutes from home, like your son, with peers from his neighborhood. It turns out our local district has a tailor made program for children with an ASD diagnosis and he's thriving there with an interpreter.
In just the few weeks since school began, we're seeing so many people embrace him and even the cross-walk woman signs to him every day. They seem to gain as much from the diversity he provides as he gains from their expertise.
Long story short....I understand exactly how you feel and it feels GOOD! Relish it!

Hethahttp://ethan-charles.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.com
